Meet Edmond Fernandes - Mangalorean Whizkid, Jack and Master of Many Trades
Published Date: 26 Oct, 2011 (3:01 AM)

BY Team Mangalorean

Mangalore: Hailing from a small village in Mangalore taluk, today, at 21, he is a medical student, entrepreneur, sportsperson, journalist, author, researcher, orator, motivator and much more.

Edmond Fernandes has, by sheer dedication and hard work, put that 'extra' into his 'extraordinary' personality. Born on September 3, 1990 in a small village of Kinnigoli in Dakshina Kannada, he moved to Mumbai to pursue education and finished his schooling from Don Bosco High school, Matunga.

He opened his early innings in football and then was also selected for hockey. Representing the school at various zones, both city and state, he further carried on the torch as he was selected for the sub-junior nationals. He also played for the Bombay Hockey Association and was closely associated with Olympians like Kuttappa and Mir Ranjan Negi from whom he learnt great skills of the game.

It was his good fortune to have been coached by Pascal, a referee of international fame.  Intense corruption situations faced by him at various levels in Maharashtra forced him to quit the game in search of greener pastures and to answer his real quest for the meaning of life.

At the young age of 17, he began his work in the field of journalism and has written extensively for various media, both print and electronic. What sparked his entry into journalism is a story in itself. He writes a lot about issues in secular politics, philosophy, communalism, medicine and the like, besides writing anything under the sun.

He is curretly working on three major books. His maiden book “Small Things That Matter Much” the book is in the process of being published."

And the other two books, one on 'The Nation’s Destiny - Reflection of a Young Indian' and the other on 'Sleep and Lifestyle Change' will be out in due course, as he is planning to complete them by the end of next year.

Being a student of Medicine, life was tough for him right from the word go, as medical course entails pressure not only on the mind but also on the psyche. Years of tears, dying self-belief and sheer grit with God’s blessings has brought him so far, he says.

He is not only associated with the medical curriculum protocol, but is also a Certified Rescuer with the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, member of The Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA – Indian Chapter ), section editor to the International Medical Journal of Students' Research, reviewer with the Student BMJ, The BMJ Group ( British Medical Journal), United kingdom.

Currently he is also the editor for Mullerpulse 2012, college magazine of Father Muller Medical College. He was invited at RIMSCON 2011, South India Medical Research Conference at Cuddapah, Andhra Pradesh to deliver a guest lecture on the “Changing Scenario of Medical Education”, making him one of the youngest medical students to deliver guest sessions at research conferences.

Besides all of the above, he is a researcher. He has done research in sleep patterns of medical students and law students under the guidance of Dr Princy Palatty, professor of Pharmacology, Father Muller Medical College. He has also carried out his research in Paediatric sleep under Dr Sanjeev Rai, chief of medical services and former dean, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore.

Currently,  he and Dr Mohammad Ashraf, associate professor of Medicine are studying Hand Patterns and Prostate Cancer Risks.

Besides this, he also gives inspirational talks to college students when invited. One among the most memorable ones, he says, was at St Mary’s College, Shirva in Udupi district, where he spoke on “In search of your true self. "

He was interviewed twice on 92.7Big FM (a Reliance company broadcast station) by Rj Avinash in recognition of his multi-faceted personality, a rare kind.  When time permits, he gives radio talks on 107.8FM Sarang and has also spoken on 100.3 AIR.

Today he stands tall and is more popular for the enterprise he founded. On April 6, he embarked on entrepreneurship by launching It is a division of Planet Minds, a dynamic and prolific set-up run by a group of young Indians, who see destiny in the eye. It began as a simple, ordinary set-up and now it is going on with a potential to take on the world. He is its founder and managing partner.

On top of all this, he is the president of the Milagres Castle Apartment-owners' Association, which post he took up at the age of only 20. Last, but not the least, he is also associated with the Indian Catholic Youth Movement and the Bombay Catholic Sabha as a member, and former ambassador to the international Journal of Students' Research.

His story continues to inspire many.  As someone said, “Some people have dreams so outrageous, that if they were to achieve them, their paths in history would be guaranteed".

So be it with Edmond.

Excellent article documenting what the young generation should do with their time.

We are so proud of you. If the young generation can join with you; today's world will be very different.

To find time to do all this when you are studying one of the most difficult of all subjects (medicine) when others are busy talking junk on facebook/twitter and eating junk foods; is a big testament to your self discipline and determination.

Very heartening to see this. You are an inspiration for others to follow.

All the best for your future Edmond. You are in a league of your own.

Kind regards

A Medico-entrepreneur is rare combination which we have ever come across. Most of them land upon just practicing. Even we do not have a hand full of researchers from the Medicos. Excited and hopeful that this guy would inspire many more. And an author too... expect another Siddartha Mukerjee is in making.
