Celebrating Independence...

This day, 57 years ago, India achieved political independence from the British rule, but she still awaits economic and social independence from the Indian state. I am not sure whether we have even genuine political independence today?. But that doesn’t and shouldn’t stop us entering into the 58th year with the hope for an India which we all dream of.

We can't understand how precious independence is, without looking into the past. Millions of people of India sacrificed their lives for us. They gave their whole and soul and even their lives to make their dream come true and give the future generation an India as a free country. But some events of the recent past raise doubts on what actually we are, the present generation giving to our great nation?

Even after more than 50 years of our independence, our political parties talk about BSP (Bijli/Power, Sadak/Road and Paani/Water) as election issues…we don’t even have basic infrastructure at most places in our country. The root cause still lies in illiteracy, unemployment and lack of basic healthcare.

Today on this day of our celebrations, I call my fellow citizens to think about our past and to contribute to our future. We have some great success stories to be proud of. A section of our society is really shining. But I think we will be an independent country in the true sense, when all the people of our nation, including the weaker section of the society and poor people can participate in our celebration and feel happy in a real way.

Mangalorean.Com wishing you all a Very Happy Independence Day!
